Today we met with two students who had spent time studying in Belgium. I'm so glad that they were willing to come share their experiences with us because now I feel more prepared for my upcoming trip!
Here are a few things I felt were important to remember:
- Rent a bike, they're inexpensive and the easiest way to get around
- Dutch, French, and English are the most commonly spoken languages
- Dress in layers, it's cool in the mornings but warms up as the day goes on
- Large focus on street-life
- Check out Belgian festivals, there may be one in June
- Don't be shocked, marijuana is legal on the streets
- Ask about student discounts
- Look into Go Card & ISC (International Student Card)
- Try to experience the nightlife
- Must try fries & chocolate
- Don't call them FRENCH fries, they originate in Belgium not France
- Ask professors at the University of Ghent to take us to Belgian farm
- Must try Pink Elephant beer
- Fun Fact: special shaped cups for each flavor of beer, have to give bartender collateral while you drink from the special cups
Can't wait!
