Professionalism & Planning

Today we met with Dr. Jeff Miller and he gave us tips on professionalism and campaign planning.

Here are his tips to professionalism:

  1. TIMELINESS - always be on time, the #1 reason for job loss is being tardy. If for any reason you are unable to make it to work (e.g. illness), let someone know ASAP via email or telephone.
  2. THREADS - figure out what you need to wear. It's never wrong to overdress until you figure out what is acceptable. Belgium is a very professional country, so they may wear business professional daily.
  3. TEAMWORK - getting along with colleagues is they key to an efficient workplace. If you find yourself in an argument with a co-worker, remain calm and apologize when necessary.
  4. TELEPHONES - learn how to use telephones in Belgium and the proper etiquette. Always repeat phone numbers TWICE when leaving messages.

In addition to these 4 major areas, Dr. Miller suggested we learn how to properly greet someone. When he was in Scotland, it was customary to stand up when someone new entered the room.

If someone gives you a business card, compliment itread itreturn the favor (if applicable).

And remember...
ALWAYS BE GRACIOUS.

When discussing campaign planning, we learned about SWOT analysis.

S          STRENGTHS

W        WEAKNESSES

O         OPPORTUNITIES

T          THREATS

It is crucial to look at every angle when planning an effective campaign. In order to be effective, plans must be consistent, flexible, and made for longevity.

This means doing the following:

  • Identify your audience
  • Clarify purpose/message
  • Set budget (largest campaign limitation)
  • Utilize controlled (paid; advertising) & uncontrolled (free; the press) efforts

I look forward to being able to apply all of this knowledge when I get to Belgium! :)
